How to add Taxes to Contracts

Tax rates in webCemeteries can be configured to automatically apply to contracts based on their active status. Once set up, any active tax rates will be applied automatically whenever a new contract is created—no need to manually add them each time.

This guide will walk you through how to create and manage tax rate items, set effective dates, and understand how they calculate within contracts. Let’s get started!

Step 1

Hover over the "Contracts" icon on the left side menu and select "Price Catalog

Step 2

Select the "Tax Rates" Item type.

Step 3

Select "Add Item", or, create a category, and then select "Add Item" in that category.

Step 4

Lets break down the Item Details and how they work:

* = Required Field

  • Name* - The name of the Tax item.
  • Rate* - Tax rate percentage.
  • Rate Type - Choose whether the tax will apply Per Item, or Per the Contract total.
    • Per Item - The Tax with apply to each individual line item in the Contract.
    • Contract Total - The tax will only apply to the Contract Total.
  • Description - Description of the item.
  • Effective Dates - Set when this tax item is active.
    • If it is before the Effective Start Date, or after the Effective End Date, then this line item is inactive and will NOT be added to a contract
    • If a Effective Start Date is added but no Effective End Date is added, then the item will become "Active" once the Start Date is reached and will remain active indefinitely.
    • If an Effective End Date is added but no Effective Start Date is added, then the item is "Active" immediately and becomes inactive once the End Date is reached.
    • If neither a Start or End Date is added, then the Item is always "Active".

Fill in the details and select "Save".

Step 5

In our example "New Local Tax Rate", The item will automatically apply itself to any contract created within the Effective Start and End dates, 1/1/2025 - 12/31/2025.

When it is added, it will calculate 2.5% of the total contract price:

Step 6

Lets see what happens when we create a contract and have active tax rates.

Follow the steps to Create a Contract. Once it is created, you will see all active tax items automatically added to the contract:

Lets add a property or line item, to see the tax rates calculation in action:

Caution

Certain items are automatically not-taxable, such as Perpetual Care or Service type items. For Inventory and Merchandise items, make sure they are marked as "Taxable" or they will not be taxed.

The "New Local Tax" calculated 2.5% of the contract total (excluding the Non-Taxable items, like the Perpetual Care). $755 x 0.025 = 18.88.
