How to Add a Relationship Between Two Contacts in the CRM

Until now, you could only link a contact to a decedent, for example, marking someone as a deceased person's daughter or next of kin (see How to Add a Contact and/or Next of Kin to a Deceased Record). There was no way to connect two living contacts to each other directly.

Now you can add a relationship between any two contacts in your CRM. This is useful any time you need to note how two people in your database are connected: spouses, siblings, a power of attorney, or an emergency contact. For example, if a customer is marked Do Not Contact, you can link them to a family member who can be reached instead, so your staff always has someone to call.

How to Add a Relationship Between Two Contacts

Step 1

Search for the contact you want to add a relationship to, and open their profile.

Step 2

On the contact's profile, find the "Relationships" tab and click "Add Relationship."

Step 3

Start typing the name of the person you want to link. If they're already in your CRM, their name will pop up in the list to the left. Click it to select them so you don't accidentally create a duplicate contact. If they aren't in your CRM yet, you can type their full name to create a new contact right from this screen.

Step 4

Choose how the two people are related from the "Relationship" dropdown (spouse, sibling, friend, etc.), then click "Save."

You may need to create relationship types before you can select any from the drop down. See this article for reference How to add (or update) Relationship types

The relationship now appears on both contacts' profiles.

How the Relationship Appears on Both Records

Once saved, the relationship shows up on both people's Relationships tabs. The profile you started from shows the label you chose, for example, "Brother."

The other person's profile shows the same relationship with "of" added to the end ("Brother of [Name]"), so your staff can tell at a glance which direction it was entered from.

You can edit the relationship type, or update the related contact's name, phone number, or other details, from either person's Relationships tab by selecting the "pencil" icon next to their information:

Changes will save to that contact's actual record everywhere it appears in webCemeteries, including on that contact's own profile. Deleting a relationship from either person's profile removes it for both people at once.

What happens when you inter a contact

If you later inter one of these contacts as a decedent, their contact-to-contact relationships stay on their original contact record but don't carry over to the new deceased record. Decedents use Deceased Relationships instead, which is a separate feature for tracking next of kin and family (see How to Add a Contact and/or Next of Kin to a Deceased Record).

To find a decedent's old contact relationships, open their deceased record, click "More," then "Original Contact," to get back to the contact profile where those relationships still live.
